As with all purchases, consumer laws are in place to protect you should you need to return a car.
If you bought from a dealer:
You’re protected under the Consumer Rights Act (2015).
If the car is faulty:
- You can reject the car and request a full refund within the first 30 days
- The dealer must attempt a repair or replacement if it's after the first 30 days but within six months
If an issue persists, you can still seek a refund, though the dealer may deduct for usage.

If you bought online
If you bought the car online from a dealer, you should be covered by the same rights as when you buy in person.
You're also covered under the Consumer Contracts Regulations (2013). This offers you the right to cancel or return your vehicle from the moment you place your order until 14 days after it's been delivered.
This only applies if:
- The entire buying process was completed online
- You didn’t have the opportunity to see the car in person
- You didn't discuss the goods or services in person

If you bought from a private seller
Private sales aren’t covered by quite as many rules and regulations as dealerships, but you do still have rights.
